The Auld Acquaintance


Are political cartoons still relevant? Yes, argues an exhibition of Scottish Independence cartoons. “The Auld Acquaintance” toured the UK and Western Europe asking of its contributors from both sides of the debate the same question that was put to Scottish voters on the 18th of September 2014: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”.

The ‘loudest’ hands in the “IndyRef” cartoon debate were those of Guardian newspaper artist Steve Bell, who published several images widely criticised for being racist:


While the debate raised the profile of Scottish political cartoonists such as Chris Cairns and Greg Moodie, examples of both below.
